I have been lucky in this regard.

At the ripe age of 18 I left home for the comfort of US Navy boot camp. To understand that statement, you would need to understand growing up in my home. That is a story for another time. After boot camp, I was lucky enough to have a successive string of mentors and influencers that led me to success.

One such person was LtCdr Gray, Officer-in -Charge at RAF Digby, UK. At this point in my career, I was facing a career decision. Stay in my current job and try to make Chief Petty Officer or submit my Officer Candidate package. Mr. Gray sat me down for an interview like many others before him had done. This one was different. He asked if I had thought about leading Sailors into battle. I responded with the typical male bravado of someone who had been in these interviews before. Then he said, "Have you ever thought about sending someone to their certain death while you stayed behind?" This was a question like I had never had before. He sent me home to contemplate that question. It changed my life. I went on the become a Chief and never gave the Officer community another thought. I takes a special person to assume the burden of command. Many nights he worked to ensure the best quality of life for his Sailors, knowing that, at any time, he may have to deploy someone halfway around the world to support a mission in a desert. A mission that few Sailors train for, desert combat.

The second person who changed my life was my boss and great mentor in the civilian world. He took a chance on me knowing that I had 20 years of cool experiences and had done really good things, but my resume was a mess (most transitioning military personnel are in the same boat). Over 3 years he sat me down several times to talk about my work and my future. One one such occasion, I told him I wanted to be a CISO. I asked if he could put me on a path to do just that. He explained to me these two things:

1. A CISO can do everything right (within the constraints of the business, of course) and still suffer a breach

2. If your company is breached, it is your fault.

These words (and his daily stress) are what changed my mind about that career choice too.

Being happy in life comes from understanding what you need, what your strengths and weaknesses are, and from surrounding yourself with wise council.

<span style="mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">
STEP 1: Set Your Objective

are you fasting? Is it for spiritual renewal, for guidance, for
healing, for the resolution of problems, for special grace to
handle a difficult situation? Ask the Holy Spirit to clarify His
leading and objectives for your prayer fast. This will enable you
to pray more specifically and strategically.

land according to 2 Chronicles 7:14. Make this a priority in your

It's 8 AM on a Sunday and I'm sitting in the airport. This will make my 4th week in a row traveling. I have 2 more to go before I can begin to recover. At age 43, traveling is beginning to become a burden.

There are many things that I could write about but one in particular is going to get my attention. My sling pack. There has been much talk recently about wearing backpacks while in a suit. I am of the camp that you shouldn't do it, but not for the reasons that most have been stating. I don't do it because it messes up the jacket. I could care less about how it looks. (oh, I have tattoos too so feel free to complain about that too).

There will always be those people who will complain because a person does not look "traditional" or "professional." My question to them is, are you paying my consulting fees for fashion advice or for the 20+ years of experience I bring to the table? Don't get me wrong, I will wear a suit when I am talking to your "c-suite" or slacks and a company polo or button-down the rest of the time. As a representative of my company, I do not get to do what I want. With that said, when I show up carrying, in my hands, a sling pack, back off.

You should be asking "Why is this guy carrying a sling pack?" The easiest way to answer that question is with a video from my friend Tom Moore. His AIDE 2016 presentation, Minimalistic Physical Assessment Kit, changed my life in a couple of ways. One is that I now use a sling pack for everything; work, hiking, and sight seeing.

I hope his presentation is helpful. If you want a sling pack for yourself, I recommend the Overwatch Sling Pack from Yukon Outfitters. Track it on Woot! to get the best deal.

I just wanted to let everyone know I will begin blogging again!
The Long Journey Back!
The first thing I want to blog about is a shout out to Johnny Long and his family. It looks like the Long's have come home after, what was it, 7 years in Uganda. Welcome home and I look forward to helping you here in the states. My family trip to Uganda and Kenya last year serves as a high point in my life. You were truly doing God's work and I am proud to say I could help!

Derby! Derby! Derby!
I have been selected to speak at DerbyCon 6.0 "Recharge!" My talk this year is entitled "Hacking for Homeschoolers: STEM Projects for under $20." I am tentatively scheduled for Saturday at 3PM. Please drop in for a little bit of a Maker Faire, some cool toys, and learnin'.
Want more info on DerbyCon, click here https://www.derbycon.com/

P.S. Are you a person of faith? Do you have questions? Do you want to slow down and fellowship with fellow Christians during a hectic weekend conference? Don't forget about CrossCon at Derbycon!

PCI Community Meeting
I will be attending the 2016 North American PCI CM this September. The week of DerbyCon by the way. (Prayers needed now please). If you want me to ask any specific PCI questions, feel free to ask your question below or contact me directly by one of the means highlighted on the right frame.

The Main Event
Last month I went with several men from Immanuel Baptist Church to The Main Event in Nashville, TN. This was a blast! Not only did I get to fellowship with some of the men of my church, I got to meet and talk with men from all over America. There were guest speakers such as Tim Tebow, Nick Vujicic, TC Stallings, and Jonathan Evans. I particularly likes the speech by Jimmy Sites. He is a Christian adventurer/hunter/outdoorsman whose show, Spiritual Outdoor Adventures, can be seen online, on DirecTv channel 604, or on Dish channel 393.

Finally,
Vietnam! and Japan!
My family is in the midst of planning a trip to Japan and Vietnam for October. We will be gone of r2 weeks. The purpose of this trip is to allow my son Isaac to see the country of his birth and be a Christian witness to the world. This will not be a mission trip like last year's Uganda and Kenya trip. I will use this forum to blog about our travels. You can expect some security advice as well (after all, this is a Security Blog).

Bye for now!Branden Millerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06880116035439677821noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8945772416230246117.post-62465296647767437702015-07-11T23:19:00.000-04:002015-07-11T23:23:28.756-04:00The Ohio InfoSec Forum Anniversary Meeting

The OISF is a small but passionate group of individuals that hosts an annual meeting at the Miami Valley Research Park in Dayton, Ohio. This is my second time going and, once again, I had fun. The size of the audience was relatively small and the level of presenters was rock star!
This years line up included Ben Ten (@Ben0xA), Dave Kennedy (@HackingDave), Adrian Crenshaw (@irongeek_adc), Phil Grimes (@grap3_ap3), Dino Tsibouris and Mehmet Munur. You have to agree that is an excellent lineup!
The price of this meeting is a whopping $10 entry fee and includes bagels and coffee for breakfast as well as pizza, drinks, and Oreo cookies for lunch. I highly recommend that you attend this meeting next year. If you are from the Dayton area, I recommend you stop bye on the 2nd Thursday of each month for their monthly meeting. More information can be found on their website. If you are on Twitter, their handle is @oisf. They are worth following.

***As always, thanks to Adrian for recording the talks. You rock! Check out the videos at irongeek.com.***

This week the EFF exposed themselves as a group of highly intelligent morons (again) when they "exposed" the U.S. Navy's attempt to purchase 0-days. Nate and Andrew admit that they found the request on a public website but then quickly changed to focusing on the evils of the government. What is the purpose of the article you may be asking? Simple. Taking a queue from the IT security sales companies, EFF has turned to simple FUD as a means to collect your donations.
Yesterday we visited Sole Hope. Their purpose is to go to communities, teach about sanitation, and find people affected by the flea locally known as a jigger. Each person is assessed for severity of infestation and the 15 worst cases are taken in for surgery. The tools used for surgery include pesticides (to kill the jiggers), a razor (to cut the skin open), and a safety pin (to dig out the eggs and larvae). I will never look at a safety pin the same.
We had lunch at Ozzie's. She is an 86 year old Australian fireplug who has lived here for over 40 years.
We wrapped the day up by teaching at the hackers pace.

This morning we got up early, ate breakfast, said our goodbyes, and headed to the airport. 4 hours later and here we are. Waiting on our flight to Nairobi where the hard work begins.

I want personally take time to thank the Longs again for opening their home to 7 complete strangers. I want to say goodbye to Mark since I didn't get to see him this morning. Finally, I wanted to mention Gerald, Johnson, and Henry. You are each special.

The family went to Amani Baby Cottage while I spent the whole day at the hackerspace with Johnny, Mark, and Henry. I got to talk to Henry in detail about his iPhone app. It is ready for release but they still need to raise the $99 to register for an Apple id.

I worked with Johnny a little on a new educational build and Chromebook for Kenya. The build was put together by Kenyans for Kenyans. How cool. I also played with the LittleBits learning system. This is what we used tonight to teach the kids about circuit theory. Just like yesterday, they loved the education. I think Johnny will have a few good trainees that can benefit from this and can reach great heights.

The other thing I had fun with was assisting Mark with the 3D printer. I learned a lot from him.

P.s. I hope you enjoy the picture of the random Hello Kitty crane game. Gotta love Africa!

We intended to wake up at 8 and go to the central market. We all got up much earlier (thanks jetlag) and just sat around enjoying the view.

We made it to the Central Market after a quick stop at the Forex to exchange some money. The market was pretty cool. The kids purchased a few things (actually, it was just Audrey). I bought some spices for myself.

We ate lunch at the Keep Cafe again. That was excellent. Then we went back to the Jinga House for a nap!

After waking up we went to the Hackers for Charity hackerspace and helped Johnny Long teach a robotics class to street kids. What an experience. These kids were great. They all listened attentively, asked and answered questions, and lit up when they ''got their hands dirty."

Tomorrow I get to spend the whole day there with Johnny and Mark while the rest of the group goes to the Amani Baby cottage.

I hope you enjoy the pictures I have posted.

We are facing a relaxing Sunday. Church service at Calvary Chapel, lunch, then a boat tour of lake Victoria and the source of the Nile River.

Tomorrow we will be working in the new HFC hackerspace. We will be teaching kids logic and basic computer theory thanks to LittleBits.

Well, 2 days until we fly out! I thought I would be nervous at this point but I feel great. It is all in God's hands. I just thought I would send a quick update to all of my followers. (all 2 of you that is)

We have received several care packages destined for Johnny Long and family. All of this should be a great addition to the things Hackers for Charity received this week from @B31tf4c3.

I have made final go-no-go checks on the equipment destined for the Kenyan orphanage and the Maasai school. Thanks as always to Hackers for Charity and World Possible for the gift of equipment and educational software. I am still a little nervous about the equipment making it to Kenya unscathed.

Gretchen has organized all the luggage for the multiple medical clinics we are hosting as well as the showing of the Jesus film at our hotel.
And goodbye! It has been a while. After blogging for a while I decided to take a break. Last month I wrote a blog for my new employer and have the bug again. This is great timing since I am about to go to Africa with my family. Our trip has been in the making for quite a while now. There are many people I would like to thank before I do anything else:
1. My family (Gretchen, Emily, Audrey, and Isaac)
2. My in-laws (Gary, Lisa, Rachel, and Nathan)
3. Our church family at Immanuel Baptist Church for the prayers
4. The people of First Baptist Church of Somerset, KY for sponsoring us, donating funds, and the prayers
5. The Hackers for Charity family (Johnny and Jen Long, Sam and Glenn) for the ideas, travel assistance, and the RuggedPi kits
6. The Appalachian Institute for Digital Evidence for hiring Emily and me (this was the moment we were able to switch from a couple of us going to the whole family going)
7. Nathan Swain at ANRC-Services for donating the computers
8. Dr. Terry Finger for providing the money for our Visas in Kenya
9. Professor Bill Gardner (@oncee) for allowing Emily and me to teach your classes at Marshall University and the mention in your book
10. The Nelson's for donating the money to buy a generator for the orphanage
PS Thanks to Handle (@jkentakula) for reminding me to thank Radio Shack. Because they went out of business, we were able to buy several items for HFC at 80% off.

Yesterday I began the enrollment process for the Veterans Career Transition Program hosted by Syracuse University. The following are some noteworthy observations about the registration/pre-launch process.

June 17
Received acceptance email for the July 2014 Cohort!

June 25
Received "next steps" inviting me to view the VCTP admissions overview video.

July 1
The first email I received had an attached standard course registration form. Nothing really to note here except that the form was partially completed by a staff member (convenient) and the Social Security Number block was labeled "Optional." This is a good thing since it lets students know that you do not have to provide it. I do question why the option to give my SSN is even there. I'm sure it eases the burden on staff processing but the h4x0r in me shivers a little.

The second email I received was an official welcome letter from the Director of the Distance Education Programs. I liked the letter because it highlighted key information about the program and my cohort. It also clearly stated who I could call if I have any questions. Hazel, you will not get a call from me yet.

July 10th
Received email notification today that my registration form has been processed.

July 16th
Received an email today that was conveniently broken up into 5 easily digestible parts
1. Advisor: I was assigned an adviser and given her contact details. Ashley F. I am glad to make your acquaintance. Looking forward to our new working relationship!
2. Java Update: This section advised me of a new Java update. This is the second item so far that makes the h4x0r in me shiver. Unlike the SSN issue above, there is no workaround. Looks like I am stuck with using Java (and opening my computer to a whole host of vulnerabilities).
3. Social media: There are 2 social media platforms that the program uses to reach veterans. You can follow them on Twitter @SUgetvet and on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/SUgetvet. They made it clear that this is not required for the course but recommended it for keeping informed of various veterans benefits.
4. Orientation: I have online orientation on Monday, July 21st at 12:00 PM. This will show me how to access the course work.
5. What's Next: Letting me know what to look for in the future.

July 16th
Received the Veterans Career Transition Program Advising Guidelines which outlines the requirements and reminds the student to use the adviser.

July 21st
Received my log in creds for the coursework in Skillport. (via email) Doh! Logged in and changed my password. Standard for a university.

Class begins...

I get the feeling that SU has its act together with regards to this program. The process seems to be well documented and followed. Each email references the prior email and refers to a followup email. This acts as a chain that is easy to follow. I hope the course material is just as well done. More to come.
Why? What other month has a series of conferences the likes of Black Hat, BSides Las Vegas, PasswordCon, and DEFCON within the first two weeks? Not only that, they are all co-located within 3 miles of each other! What?!?!

Here is a list of recommendations leading up to, during, and after this whirlwind of learning, hacking, and frivolity.

1. Read blogs/sites about the cons so you can get perspective. I recommend these blogs:

The OCD Diaries by Bill Brenner (actually, the whole blog rocks)

The Akamai blog by Bill Brenner (no man crush, just great info)

The DEFCON Survival Manuel

Take what these site tell you as a grain of salt. Remember that YOUR con experience is set by YOU.

2. Follow @HackBus on Twitter. HackBus is an event in itself. Watch as a band of merry men, and women, journey from the Bay area through California and on to greatness!

3. Follow @defconparties on Twitter. You going to Vegas on a budget? @defconparties can get you free food, drinks, and entertainment!

4. Go with a purpose and a plan. Try to stick to it. If you suffer from "shiny object syndrome" this week can be exhausting. Even if your plan sucks, it is easier to deviate from a plan than it is to make one up on the fly.

5. Attend the DEFCON Toxic BBQ. During my first DEFCON (17), I met and spoke with Cap'n Crunch. Are you kidding me? Just make sure you bring some meat, sides, drinks, or volunteer to cook.

6. Attend the DEFCON Shoot hosted by @deviantollam. This is a chance to throw some lead down range with like minded individuals. Full auto guns usually make an appearance and there could even be a cannon.

7. Meet and greet. This one was a hard one for me at first but it can be a game changer. DEFCON even has a badge contest that requires human contact. Some of the greatest minds in the world attend. Collaborate!

8. Make sure you attend BSides Las Vegas. What you will find is the same level of talks as Black Hat (better in my opinion) and DEFCON. You can hear talks from the newest vulns discovered to how to properly make an Old Fashioned. No prior signup needed this year. You get your badges at the door.

9. Sign up as a volunteer at one of the conferences. You give back to the community and feel great about yourself. Some of these cons even feed you. (Remember #3 and the budget thing?)

10. Hang out at the Lock Pick Village/ Wireless Village. Heck, a couple of years ago I was hanging out at the Wireless Village when they started a training session for the Technician Class Ham license. I listened to what they had to say, took the test the next day, and got certified. Last year I studied a little, asked some of the Elmers some questions, and passed the General Class test.

11. Stop by and say hello to the staff of Hackers for Charity. They will blow you mind. You will walk away knowing that hackers do great things in the world.

Good luck to all! I hope to see you there! I am easy to spot. I will be the short, overweight guy, with stubble and wearing a tee shirt.Branden Millerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06880116035439677821noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8945772416230246117.post-26715125827178144522014-07-01T12:59:00.000-04:002014-07-01T12:59:07.010-04:00Mind Map of my Blog

The program is called the Veterans Career Transition Program or VCTP. The purpose of the program is to help military Veterans and their spouses codify their experience with an industry certification or train them for transition into the civilian workforce.
Rather than restate what is on their website, I will simply post the link to their program "one pager." As I go through the program, I will blog about my experience. Please pass this along to anyone you know who is a Veteran or the spouse of a Veteran..

P.S. I have decided to pursue my PMP certification since I have performed that role for years but never too that leap to certification.
For those who have read my blog before, you know I have a passion for "local" cons. BSides Nashville, AIDE, Hack3rCon, SkyDogCon, DerbyCon...I like them all. Now there is one more to add to the list. The inaugural CircleCityCon was held this weekend in Indianapolis, IN. I feel honored that they allowed me to volunteer as an IronGeek video jockey and selected my daughter as a speaker. The organizers are familiar faces who I have seen at many other regional cons.
The format of the con is the familiar setup of speaker halls (2x), high quality training (free), a CTF, lock pick village, and something new to me, a book exchange. The lineup of speakers was top notch and the training, I was told, was professional.
Of special note was the feel of the con. It reminded me of DerbyCon. I did not witness any drunken stupidity or general d-baggery. I look forward to seeing everyone again next year.

Now...how do I get to GrrCon?
Yep, that happened. Not only did BSides Nashville have world class speakers, free ribs for lunch, and a healthy turnout of first time con-goers (round 70% said it was their first con), they had this guy! The only negative comment I have about the whole thing is that my work laptop - with my presentation - crashed. This didn't affect me too much since I had my presentation saved in multiple places and only had to recreate about an hour worth of work.

If you want to watch my presentation, click here. As always, thanks to Adrian for donating his time and energy to recording the talks. Also, thanks to the organizers for allowing me to help Adrian. You should all volunteer at least once at a con. There is no easier way, to give back to the community.

Here are the things I messed up in my presentation that I want to call out:
1. Totally butchered the meaning of Confidentiality. I got caught up in the moment.
2. I didn't come up with the tag line on the sticker.
3. The "small cons that don't mean anything" line was the result of my sending a CFP to a large, well known conference. They responded by my query by saying that line.
4. The $80 I spent for the RachelPi was raised by Emily.
5. Not EVERY presentation in the military has a Sun Tzu quote. Just the ones given by the rear echelon people.
6. I do know what a "belt and suspenders" DMZ is, I just haven't seen one in a while.
7. My buddy that calls people "business units" is from Spain so he doesn't have a mastery of English.

Thanks for your time and I hope to see you at Circle City Con in Indianapolis.Branden Millerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06880116035439677821noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8945772416230246117.post-82676871661496268452014-05-10T11:13:00.000-04:002014-05-10T11:13:38.543-04:00ISSA Kentuckiana NMAP Workshop

Looks like the founders of BSides Nashville have kicked it up a notch (again!). Today in the Twitterverse I noticed they were pushing an app that enables con-goers to carry their program on their cellphone. Check out the tweet:

After downloading the Eventjoy app I was able to see maps of the con, the speaker list, speaker bios, sponsor information, and notifications (as well as other things). The coolest thing about the app was the ability to build "My Agenda" from the "Schedule" menu with a simple click.

The app rocks and BSides Nashville should be commended on having the foresight to use it.

Which begs the question, why aren't more cons using these kind of tools to enhance the con experience?Branden Millerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06880116035439677821noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8945772416230246117.post-29427459977553752772014-04-21T12:31:00.000-04:002014-05-06T11:21:26.159-04:00B-Sides Nashville: Another excellent con (I'm sure)

Another installment of B-Sides with a touch of Southern charm. From what I understand it came in as reason #26 in a recent top 25 reasons to visit Nashville. From all the chatter, it appears to be a reunion of sorts for the many of the people that attended SkyDogCon last year.

This is the first con I have ever submitted a CFP to where I didn't get selected. Am I bitter. Heck NO! Not when you see a lineup of presenters like Jack Daniel, Paul Coggin, Rafal Los, Jason Street, and others. This first year con is STACKED! Add to this lineup a Metasploit class (only $300) by Georgia Weidman and you have what promises to be a great couple of days.
